You should typically be able to sleep through the night without having to get up to pee. Around and after menopause, the changes in hormones can lead to increased urine output overnight, and one trip to the bathroom can be normal. All things considered, if you drink herbal teas or alcohol just before bed, you might have to get up to urinate which can be expected no matter what age group you fall into.

If you do not fall into one of the aforementioned situations where waking up to pee during the night is normal, you might have a problem with night-time urination - even if you are only waking up once!

Possible causes include:

  • Overactive bladder Overactive bladder - if your daytime urine frequency is high, your bladder will likely be unable to tolerate longer periods of filling, such as overnight.
  • Poor sleep hygiene - bad sleep habits and decrease your quality of sleep, making it easier for the urge to wake it, and actually producing more urine overnight than you typically would.
  • Certain health problems (like sleep apnea) might also decrease your quality of sleep, and might require medical intervention.

As pelvic floor physiotherapists, our role is to determine what particular situation(s) is likely responsible for your night-time. Typically, a balance of lifestyle tips and modifications, specific exercises, manual techniques, and bladder retraining will be employed to help you reach your personal goals and help you regain control of your bladder to have a restful sleep!
