While childbirth is beautiful, it is also a traumatic event for the female body. The passage of the baby through the birth canal or a cesarean delivery can impair the local structures. These structures do not always return to their previous level of function on their own. Even in the absence of symptoms, you could have impaired tissues which you might only become aware of in 30 years. Our role as pelvic floor physiotherapists is to make you comfortable talking about these touchy subjects, and help you navigate your road to recovery through safe exercise and lifestyle habits while balancing your new lifestyle.

WHAT CHANGES CAN HAPPEN?

Many women are still uncomfortable talking about the changes their bodies have gone through during pregnancy or following delivery as most of the changes are considered taboo by today’s societal standards:

DELIVERY CESARIAN

When can I start physio after my C-section?

You can come in for an evaluation of your pelvic floor as soon as you feel you are ready for it; however, we will not start abdominal muscles strengthening or stretching until after your doctor gives you a green light, which is usually around 6 weeks postpartum. 

DELIVERY VAGINAL

When can I start physio after giving birth vaginally?

If you were lucky enough not to have any tearing of your pelvic floor, you can consult as soon as you feel physically (and mentally!) ready. 

If you had a tear occur during delivery, it is recommended to wait 6 weeks before having a pelvic floor evaluation because your sutures might still be healing. We will not perform a complete evaluation until we see the scar is well healed.

If you tore but would still like to consult before 6 weeks, we would be able to start working on general exercises to promote healing of any possible diastasis recti and activation exercises for your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.
