Physiotherapy for Musicians

To support you throughout your hours of practice and performance

Is pain a part of your musical practice?

At Active Solution Physiotherapy, we are pleased to offer an adapted physiotherapy approach to musicians of all levels of experience. With relevant musical expertise, our physiotherapists will guide you to care for your body - your most important instrument!

WHAT IS IT?

At Active Solution Physiotherapy, we recognize that musicians face unique physical challenges related to the practice of their instrument in addition to the high volume of practice required to master and interpret a piece.

Our physiotherapy approach for musicians is specifically created to respond to the needs of this profession. It also aims to prevent injuries related to instrument practice and related tasks (transportation, setup, adjustments, maintenance, performance, etc.) as well as recovery when an injury is present.

In addition to their years of clinical experience and mastery of the McKenzie Method, our physiotherapists also have first-hand expertise as musicians, allowing them to fully understand the physical and artistic challenges of your practice.

WHAT CAN BE TREATED?

Prolonged postures, repetitive movements and postural fatigue can bring about important muscle tension and imbalances, which can lead to an overuse injury.

While each instrument has its own individual characteristics and implications, injuries that are most commonly seen in musicians include:

Neuromuscular conditions

Such as carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, focal dystonia

Bursitis

Neck pain

Including cervicogenic dizziness

Vocal fatigue

Assessment and Treatment

When possible, we invite you to bring your instrument to your appointment in order for your physiotherapist to better understand your functional needs.

The assessment begins by an interview where your medical history, symptoms and their impact on our daily activities, and goals are discussed. The conversation is then followed by a physical exam which can include strength and mobility testing, and a postural assessment with and without your instrument. This information allows your physiotherapist to best understand your condition and determine the most appropriate plan of treatment..

From these results, your physiotherapist will suggest specific exercises as well as provide ergonomic recommendations linked to your instrumental practice. The exercises will evolve as you recover to encourage healing,, optimize performance, and prevent future injury.
