Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT)

Relieve pain and improve mobility with Muscle Activation Technique (MAT).

WHAT IS MAT - Muscle activation techniques?

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a manual technique addressing the neuromuscular cause of pain to improve the body’s overall function and therefore, performance.

Muscle inhibition and MAT

As a reflexive response to injury, a muscle may have a diminished ability to contract. While this reflex serves the purpose of preventing further damage to the injured area, the lack of activation of that muscle can lead to a loss of strength which overtime can contribute to joint instability, compensations in muscle recruitment patterns, and recurring discomfort and pain.

MAT can address the root of recurring pain by identifying the inhibited muscle and helping it activate again, address the compensation pattern developed throughout the injury and post-injury phase, and help restore balance and function of the affected joint and the body as a whole.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MUSCLE ACTIVATION TECHNIQUES (MAT)?

MAT is a great complementary therapy to your fitness routine, athletic training, or to your recovery routine. You could benefit from MAT if:

You find yourself lacking mobility in certain areas due to muscle tension

You want to improve your athletic abilities

You experience pain on a daily basis

You experience pain when doing a given task or performing a given activity

You want to prevent injury… and re-injury

Such as: knee pain, back pain, strains, foot pain

WHAT TO EXPECT?

Should MAT be advised by your therapist, it can be integrated into your massage therapy session, regardless of duration.

Assessment of muscle function

Done at the beginning of the session while the patient is fully clothed, the therapist completes an assessment to identify which muscles are likely to be inhibited, or functioning suboptimally.

Following the assessment, the therapist leaves the room to provide privacy for the patient to undress and position themselves comfortably on the massage table and under the blanket.

Correction of muscle inhibition

The therapist will seek to restore optimal communication between the nervous system and the muscle in order to then improve muscle recruitment and function.

Restoration of range of motion

As the communication of the neuromuscular system is restored, balance and stability of the joint can also be restored allowing for decrease in tension and an increase in range of motion.

Personalized treatment

Drawing on a wide range of techniques, our certified MAT specialist and licensed massage therapist customizes each treatment to the unique needs of the individual, ensuring every session is truly personalized.
