Strength Training and Running
Why strength train during the running season?
Strength training is essential for improving running performance as it enhances the power, endurance, and efficiency of a runner's muscles. By building strength in key muscle groups such as the core, thighs, and glutes, runners can improve their stride, decrease their energy expenditure, and maintain better form throughout longer distances.Strength training also helps to prevent injuries by correcting muscle imbalances, improving joint stability, and improving functional mobility. Additionally, stronger muscles allow for quicker recovery and improved overall performance, making strength training a critical component of a well-rounded training program for runners aiming to boost speed and endurance while minimizing risk of injuries.
The importance of progressive overload
As the training season progresses, so too do the requirements of the program. If you’ve followed a running program, you may have noticed that there are different running workouts throughout the week (interval training, recovery runs, long runs, tempo runs, etc.). You may have also noticed that the target speeds also increase as race day approaches, leaving you surprised at how fast you’ve become. This gradual increase in intensity is part of the principle of progressive overload.
When we expose our body to positive stresses, we adapt by becoming stronger and faster, provided we allow adequate recovery. This process of“overcompensation” helps prepare us to handle even more stress in the future. However, insufficient recovery between workouts can lead to overtraining, causing fatigue and a decline in performance. Proper rest, nutrition, and progressive overload are essential to ensure that the body benefits from training and performs at its best.
Incorporating a strength training regimen can help compliment your running workout and help improve your muscle strength, endurance, agility and power, that in turn, can help improve your running performance.
